Libertarian Society Constitution
Article I: Name
The name of this organization is the "University of Chicago Libertarian Society," (LS).


Article II: Purpose
1. To explore libertarian/classical liberal ideas through discussion and debate;
2. To promote the principles of libertarianism among members of the University community.


Article III: Membership
Section 1. Eligibility. Membership is open to all members of the University community.
Section 2. Voting Membership. Voting membership is limited to currently registered University of Chicago students. Full voting membership shall be extended to members who have attended at least three out of the five most recent regular meetings, or by a majority vote of current voting members. Members eligible to vote are said to be in good standing.


Article IV: Officers
Section 1. Elected Officers. The elected officers of the LS shall be President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Officers must be currently enrolled students in good standing.


A. President. The President shall organize and preside over all LS meetings; shall plan LS activities; and shall represent the LS in an
official capacity (i.e., act as a liaison with the Student Activities Office; University of Chicago administrators, faculty, and students; and other libertarian groups). The President shall also assume the duties of the other officers in the case of vacancy until the election of a new officer.
B. Vice President. The Vice President shall preside in the absence of the President, and shall carry out responsibilities as assigned by the President.
C. Treasurer. The Treasurer shall prepare annual and quarterly budgets, submit expense forms, pay all bills, oversee the LS's accounts, and coordinate fund raising activities. All funds collected must be deposited in the LS's ORCSA account.
D. Secretary. The secretary shall keep a record of attendance, and shall keep records of all current members in good standing. The secretary shall publish minutes of the meetings.


Section 2. Appointed Officers. The President shall appoint such committee chairmen, activity coordinators, and other positions as may be necessary for the successful operation of the LS.


Section 3. Terms of Office. Terms of office for Elected Officers shall last one year, beginning and ending on the date of election. Terms of office for Appointed Officers shall last the duration of the assignment, beginning on the date of appointment.


Article V: Elections
Section 1. Time. All officers shall be elected at a regular club meeting in the Winter Quarter and shall take office at the end of Winter Quarter.


Section 2. Nominations. Nominations of candidate for LS officer positions may be made from the floor by any LS member in good standing.


Section 3. Election Procedure. Members shall vote for one candidate for each office. Officers shall be elected by a simple majority of members present and in good standing.


Section 4. Impeachment. Officers shall be removed from office upon a vote of two-thirds of the members present and in good standing.


Section 5. Vacancies. In the event of a vacancy among the officers, a new officer shall be elected at a subsequent regular meeting. The term of office of these officers shall end at the next regular election of officers, as in Article V Section 1.


Section 6. Ties. In the event of a tie, a coin shall be flipped to determine the winner.


Article VI: Regular Meetings
The LS shall hold regular meetings while school is in session. A regular meeting time will be determined by the officers. Proper notice of meetings shall be given to all members in good standing.


Article VII: Amendments
Amendments to the constitution shall be made at regular meeting of the LS, and adopted upon an affirmative vote by two-thirds of members present and in good standing.


Article VIII: Effective Date
This Constitution shall become effective on April 2, 2002.
